The Explorer ST finds Market for Performance SUVs, Helping Explorer Reach New Milestones

The Ford Explorer was first introduced in 1990, reinventing the SUV segment with a family-friendly 4-door model that still possessed typical 4x4 capabilities. Thirty years later, the Explorer continues to adapt to consumer needs, finding new markets, and hitting new milestones.

This January, the eight millionth Explorer was sold, a feat no other SUV can claim as the Explorer remains America’s best-selling SUV.  Part of the Explorer’s current success is due to finding a market for performance SUVs with the Ford Explorer ST.

“Ford changed the game three decades ago with the civilized, all-purpose utility vehicle refined with easy-to-use electronic 4x4 controls and luxury packages like the Eddie Bauer edition,” said Patterson. “Families flocked to the new platform, leaving their boring minivans behind – and we’re seeing history repeat itself all over again.”

The 400 horsepower Explorer ST is blowing people away everywhere, including first-time Ford buyers. The ST accounts for every one out of five Explorer sales, with nearly 28% of non-Ford brand trade-ins coming from luxury brand vehicles. The Explorer was completely redesigned for the 2020 model, featuring a rear-wheel drive powertrain and an available 3.0L EcoBoost engine that improves towing capabilities by 600 pounds. The Explorer ST continues to exceed sales expectations with the newly found growing market for performance SUVs.

“Ford ST stands for performance for enthusiasts, and Explorer ST is no exception,” said Craig Patterson, Ford SUV marketing manager. “We believe once drivers feel the power and refinement of our first-ever Explorer ST, performance bred from racetracks around the world, demand will only grow stronger.”

In preparation for the release of the 2021 Explorer model, Ford has already announced that the 2021 Explorer XLT will be available in the Sport Appearance package. With 18% of new Explorer buyers falling between 18-35 years of age and 46% falling between 36-55 years of age, the sport appearance package will offer the sporty style many younger customers are looking for.

“Our Sport Appearance Package offers a new styling dimension for Explorer XLT customers,” said Patterson. “It has always been a favorite among our younger customers looking for a more energetic design and feel at a great value.”
